Machine Overview & Technical Data



MICROMAT
Printed Circuit Board drilling and routing equipment has been designed to allow printed circuit boards to be drilled quickly and efficiently with a minimum of financial outlay or operator training. Control is implemented by a purpose built control system which uses single press keystrokes to enter, edit and then to run drilling and routing programs. Regularly used patterns, such as those for DIL packages can be programmed as subroutines and repeated wherever required and complete patterns can be rotated or mirror imaged through the use of MM-PLOT software which is included with the control system. CAD drill data on floppy disk can be loaded directly into the control system. Completed programs may be stored on floppy disk for future use or translated into different formats for use in other makes of drilling machine. Drill programs may also be transferred to and from a central computer system via a local area network 

PROGRAMMING
Using the powerful built-in programming facilities, the system is taught the pattern of holes to be drilled by using the joystick control to guide the TV camera over either a copy of the PCB artwork or a complete PCB. The programming screen displays a magnified image of the artwork (15x) and includes an electronically generated target. When the target and hole positions are aligned, a single button press will store the X and Y axes co-ordinates and the size of the hole for inclusion in the finished file. Once all the positions have been entered and checked for accuracy, the program may be run to drill the pattern of holes. Full editing facilities are available for inserting and deleting information and for moving positions to correct or modify existing programs.

DRILLING
Up to three boards of 1.6mm material may be stacked together and held in position by a 1/8" pin and slot tooling system. A combined dust extraction and pressure foot assembly clamps the work to the bed of the machine before the drill enters the stack. After completing each run, a single key press will restart the machine to drill another stack. Deep holes can be drilled in steps (pecking) to maintain accuracy for small diameters or to depths greater than the length of the cutter for tools greater than 1/8" diameter

ROUTING
Routing data is entered in the same way as a drilling program with single button commands and with full linear and circular interpolation provides a simple data entry system for complex shapes. Depending on the spindles fitted to the machine, the Micromat is capable of routing up to three boards of 1.6mm material. 

TOOL CHANGE
Manual tool change versions of the machine employ a simple method where drill changes are performed quickly, taking only a few seconds. Speed and feed parameters are set manually for each tool size. 
On the Auto tool change machines the speed and feed parameters are entered into, and saved with, the drill program and are set automatically for each tool size each time a tool change is requested.

CONSTRUCTION
The drilling units are based on a composite steel and aluminium chassis providing rigidity and stability. All axes are driven by brushless dc motors which have a very high holding torque at standstill. This makes the machine suitable for small hole drilling since there is absolutely no table movement when the drill is passing through the work piece.

DRILL SPINDLES
The manual tool change machines are fitted with 125 Watt Kavo 4025 spindles with a speed of up to 60,000 r.p.m. or 450 Watt Kavo 4032 spindles, again up to 60,000 r.p.m. where routing is the major use. These are ball bearing type spindles. 
Automatic Tool Change machines are fitted with Air Bearing spindles, which run at up to 110,000 r.p.m. and are ideally suited to small hole drilling and yet still capable of heavy duty routing. The spindles have high accuracy air bearings and require little in the way of maintenance. Kavo 4033 ball bearing spindles can be fitted for light drilling applications.

CONTROLLER
Machines manufactured before 2002 use a purpose built Micromat computer with a separate monitor for the CCTV system. The controller is based on simplicity and uses single button commands for all programming. The user manual for these systems is available in PDF format here.

Machines machines manufactured after 2002 use a PC based controller incorporating a colour graphics display, keyboard and joystick control and has 3" disk drives for compatibility with MS-DOS based CAD systems. Programming, editing and drilling functions are all controlled from single button commands and full on-screen help is always available. An integral CCTV system displays a 15X picture, embedded in the programming screen, to allow data entry from filmwork and to aid editing of existing data. Drilling and routing files are normally loaded from, and saved to, floppy disk. Reading files from disk is simplified by the use of a point and shoot system to avoid typing names. Program files may also be transferred between the machine and a host computer via an optional network system. Drilling and routing patterns can be displayed graphically in relation to the machine bed and can be step and repeated, flipped and rotated, all on screen, before loading into the system. Individual tool parameters are programmed for each tool size and tool management facilities will stop the machine whenever a pre-set tool life has been exceeded. MANUAL TOOL CHANGE MACHINES
The MM300/500 and MM470/600 are Manual Tool Change drilling and routing machines. Tool changes are performed quickly and easily, taking only a few seconds. Up to three boards of 1.6mm material may be stacked together for drilling and work is held in position by a standard 1/8" pin and slot tooling strip set into the bed of the machine. Kavo 4025 ball bearing spindles are fitted as standard and they can be freely interchanged with the Kavo 4026.
 The 450VA type 4032 is a heavy duty spindle for both drilling and routing applications and is specified by placing an "L" after the model number e.g. MM470 L. All axes are driven by brushless dc stepper motors which have a very high holding torque at standstill. This makes the machine suitable for small hole drilling since there is absolutely no table movement when the drill is passing through the work piece. The X and Y axes are capable of speeds in excess of 3 metres per minute giving a drilling rate of around 140 hits per minute in production.
